Thesummarychartisfairlyeasyifyouthinkofitasanexerciseinlocatingthemainideaofthepassage,itstopicsentences,andconclusion.However,nothingisaseasyasitseemsontheiBTTOEFLtest,right?Scanthefirstandlastsentencesofeachparagraph.Thesearetheusualhidingplacesforthepointsthatwillbestsummarizethereadingpassage.Becareful,though,becausesomeparagraphsinverttheirstructure.ThemostcommonstructureinwrittenEnglishistobeginwithamainideaandthensupportitwithR.E.D.(reasons,examples,anddetails).Theinvertedstyleismostcommoninthefirstandlastparagraph,sobecareful!TheseparagraphswillbeginwithR.E.D.andworktowardsthethesisorconclusion.Again,themostcommonareasarethefirstandlastsentencesofeachparagraph.Wheneveryoufindtwoanswerchoicesfromthesameparagraph,thenyouknowthatoneneedstobeeliminated.However,keepinmindthatsomeanswerchoicesforthesummarychartactuallyincludemultiplepiecesofinformationthatmightoccurthroughoutaparagraph.Ifthisisthecase,thenyouknowit’sagoodchoice.
